Taking the toxicity out of social media: Meet Suffolk founder Remmy

With support, funding and mentorship available for early-stage tech start-ups, Suffolk is making itself home to innovators with bright ideas to help tackle big challenges. One such innovator is Remmy, the founder of ReAktu and an entrepreneur who has set his sights on taking the toxicity out of social media.

ReAktu founder Remmy stands with a phone displaying the home page of his social media app

Coming from a background in fashion design and sales rather than technology, he developed the concept after literally dreaming up the idea and sketching it in a notebook beside his bed.

Talking about his vision for ReAktu, Remmy explained: “I just think it’s the world is full of negativity, it often sells more than the positive. But this idea takes away the negative – so hopefully the positive will come through. We’ve tried to remove the chaotic element of social media, things like reply wars, and keep it focused on the topics people actually want to discuss.”

To make this possible, Reaktu uses some unusual functionality – such as limiting people to one comment per post. Remmy is realistic about the behaviour change needed to encourage people to embrace a new way of doing things online, but feels that the potential benefits will make it worth the effort. “It’s going to be long and it’s going to be hard,” he told us. “But because we’re such a small company we’re able to react very quickly to what people tell us about the service. I don’t do things by halves, so we’re just going for it.”

Since launch, ReAktu has been evolving rapidly, with a major milestone coming through a partnership with Halo Festival, where the platform was adapted to support live event engagement and audience feedback.

“Partnering with Halo on their very first festival was a great honour for us at ReAktu and it shows that Halo are truly for local business and community support. We only had a small amount of time to make it happen, including reshaping our whole platform, getting a team together for the day and designing and getting merchandise made.

“We did it because it was a huge thing for us to be associated with such a prestigious and established business. I am also excited to add that they were very happy with our partnership and confirmed our collaboration for next year.”

This offers a whole new avenue of opportunity for the company, and Remmy plans to explore more ways to take events forwards as a key part of ReAktu’s offer. Keen to know what’s next for ReAktu, we also asked Remmy about future plans. While reluctant to reveal too much, he hinted that more exciting developments may be on the horizon.

“Great question. I recently got my brilliant tech guys to give me a quote for an exciting new addition to the platform… but due to financial restraints, I’m putting a little hold on it. I want us to concentrate on user acquisition and engagement, but I can promise you that what’s coming next is truly exciting and still keeps control in all users’ hands. It will be a game changer for us.”

While the next stage of ReAktu’s development remains under wraps for now, Remmy remains focused on growing the platform, building partnerships and attracting new users. For a business that started as an idea scribbled down in the middle of the night, the journey is still only just beginning.
